Computer Science and Informatics Studies, Roskilde University
Spring Semester 2017

Courses and project works offered in this semester

The courses and practical activities are marked as Bachelor or Master level. This is how they are classified at Roskilde, but for exchange and guest students we can select from both levels to make the best, individual program, depending on your interests and detailed background.

RAWDATA Responsive Applications, Web services and Databases Contents: 1) Databases, 2) Data communication and Network with focus on Web Services, 3) Development of responsive applications.
Prerequisites: Some experience with (object-oriented) programming, for example obtained by completing the Introduction to Programming. Basic knowledge about methods in Software Engineering, as can be obtained from for instance the course Modelling and Knowledge Management. Basic knowledge about algorithms.

master 10 ECTS
RAWDATA
portfolio
RAWDATA Practical dimension Closely linked with the RAWDATA course. It consists of three smaller subprojects (larger practical works) with problems and challenges related to the three corresponding sections of the course. The integration of course and project portfolio throughout the semester is designed to develop competence and skills in specific theoretical and practical areas. The goal is that the student, based on knowledge of relevant theory, will obtain skills to the development of responsive applications in a distributed environment.

master 15 ECTS
UxD User experience design User experience (UX) is the concept to talk about user experience in relation to interactive systems. Earlier we talked about usability or user-friendliness. This course will you a thorough understanding of the concept and its elements, as well as of methods for designing and evaluating user experience. Further the course will train you in applying the concepts and methods to real life interactive systems.

master 5 ECTS
AAI Algorithms for Artificial Intelligence No description available yet. master 5 ECTS
BUITA IT-architecture and user driven software design The course revolves around describing and redesigning an IT Systems Architecture. The purpose of this is to: ”You must have an across-the-board understanding of technology at a high level and of the real-world issues and problems the system is required to solve. You should have real experience with designing and building systems, although it may not always be possible to have direct, practical knowledge of the specific technologies you plan to use. The course will place IT systems architecture within four core areas of Informatics: 1) Systems Development and Design. 2) Evaluation of IT usage. 3) Implementation and Change Management. 4) IT security.

master 10 ECTS
BUITA
portfolio
BUITA Practical dimension Closely linked with the BUITA course. It involves a collection of works (text, program code, models (architecture, information, etc.)) associated with practical workshops. The portfolio further includes a reflection document relating to at least three of the four core areas. The reflection document relates practical experience with relevant theories from the Informatics core areas. The portfolio further includes a front page, table of content, literature list and appendices. In the portfolio work you will work with industry standard techniques in relation to it systems architecture.

MKM: Modelling and Knowledge Management Knowledge about data models and system development methods. Skills in using known data modelling techniques and languages. Skills in producing minor data models and implementing them in a database system. Competencies in modelling a problem domain and corresponding information system. Competencies in planning and executing a small project concerning data and knowledge management, from modelling user needs to evaluating the solution.

bac 5 ECTS
CS-SMP: Subject module project in Computer Science A first software development project.

NB: This activity is also offered in English, although the referenced page indicates "Dansk" ("Danish" in Danish).
bac 15
ECTS

Notice that guest and exchange students, including Erasmus, must include with their application documentation for proficiency in English. See more details at this page. If you intend to follow a course given in Danish, you should substantiate that you are able to follow lectures and take part in discussions, which is normally the case for student from other Nordic countries.

Recommendation

For student at early master or late bachelor level, we recommend semester programs consisting of RAWDATA + RAWDATA portfolio + a 5 ECTS course or BUITA + BUITA portfolio + a 5 ECTS course.
The portfolio projects cannot be taken without the matching course, and the other way round, taking one of RAWDATA and BUITA without the matching portfolio project is problematic (i.e., dropping the practical parts).

Courses in Danish Language and Culture, the so-called Foundation Course

Roskilde University offers also courses that introduce to Danish Language and Culture (limited number of participants). Find more information at https://www.ruc.dk/index.php?id=5847&L=1 (page regularly updated; may list dates of earlier courses).

Notice that these courses start mid August and mid January and that you may need to register separately for these courses.
