Research:

Physiological and biochemical adaptations to cold and drought in ectothermic animals, physical chemistry of cryoprotectants, membrane/cryoprotectant interactions, water balance in invertebrates, antifreeze protein and ice nucleation protein structure and function, cryptobiosis in tardigrades. At present we are working on the following projects: Ice crystal growth patterns and the function/structure relationships in solutions of antifreeze proteins from the barkbeetle Rhagium inquisitor, the eel pout Zoarces viviparus, the fiord cod Gadus ogac and the mealworm Tenebrio molitor. Purification and characterization of antifreeze proteins from Rhagium inquisitor and Zoarces viviparus. Water balance in T. molitor and the larvae of the tenebrionid beetle Zophobas morio. Freezing tolerance in the sibirean salamander Salamandrella keyserlingi and the frog Rana arvalis. Drought tolerance and control of the locusts Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria.
